Re-purposing: Birthday Edition

4 decades!!  Today my lovely husband celebrates his 40th birthday.

The best part of our day started with Elaina romping into our room along about 6:15 a.m. (per usual) and wishing her Daddy a happy birthday.  Very soon she realized that she hadn't yet had time to make him a card and hustled right downstairs to do just that.

About a half hour and a little light sleeping (for us) later, she blew up stairs, envelope and card in hand, and excitedly handed over her creation to Eric.  Inside the heart covered envelope was a paper covered, singing Valentine's day card which she cleverly recycled with birthday wishes and her love in the form of XOXOXO and hearts strewn about.  She had taped on a new cover and inside message to disguise the Valentine's day message - but when the music began to sing about Cupid and Valentine's day, Eric and I couldn't help but to chuckle! I'm pretty sure that was the very best card ever made!

Christmas Program

And we're rounding out yet another busy week.  This evening, my in-laws arrived in time for dinner and to attend Elaina's first grade Christmas program.  Already I like the fact that the school never weaseled out and referred to it as a "Holiday" program.  It's Christmas for goodness sake - call it what it is!

The four classes of first graders brought together about a hundred kids and it was utterly amazing how in tune they were with following the music director by hand signals and gestures alone.  Elaina had a short speaking part in which she introduced a song and all of the kids were more than adorable.

As we watched them and listened to them sing all of their seven songs, I realized that these really are most important and enjoyable and memorable moments of my life.  At no cost and no fanfare.  The sheer innocence and glory of 6 and 7 year old voices singing Christmas songs is likely one of the best gifts I will receive this season.  Thankful!

Fresh Start

Today was the dawning of a new era at work.  One of our co-workers had received the promotion of becoming our new supervisor.  While he has a big job ahead of him, the oppression of our previous babysitter  supervisor has come to an end.  I thought of how much I wouldn't miss her scrutinizing remarks, her snarky comments and her most irritating habits.  It was finally a work day worth looking forward to.

In other news, Elaina has been giving us a run for our money in the behavioral department.  It's been a while since we've enjoyed the pleasant, calm and rational Elaina.  And tonight, she was back!  I told her over and over how delightful her behavior was and how much I didn't want to put her to bed tonight so that I could just stay up and enjoy her.  I also made mention that when she doesn't behave like this, I want to put her to bed early to give my ears a break.

I'm thankful for the peace in my day, the enjoyment that was brought to each transition of my day and my husband coming home safely after working a 14 hour day.

trip.

Today, Eric booked our trip to Florida!  HOORAY!

It's been 2 years since we've gone on a winter vacation and even longer than that since we've gone on a summer vacation for more than 3 consecutive days.

I guess that it's time! While in Florida, we have the pleasure of spending half of the week with my grandma and the other half of the week with my in-laws.  It's fortunate that we're going to be saving money on lodging since this Florida vacation will include a trip to Disney!  It seem as though I am thrilled to pieces and I'm so looking forward to sharing the Magical Kingdom with my family.

Looking at the prices for airfare and Disney tickets, I am more than thankful that we are able to do this for our kids.  That we have the good fortune of having jobs and very little debt that help to make this possible.  Most of all, I am thankful that we have two healthy kids that we have the privilege of calling our own to bring this magic into their lives.

birthday.

I'm thankful for my birthday.  Praise God that He allowed me another year older. More days to live to the fullest and be the best person that I can be.

This morning, I called my parents to thank them for birthing me; most of the gratitude to my Mother;-) My friends took me to lunch.  A co-worker brought in cupcakes.  My facebook page was full of birthday wishes.  Friends joined us for dinner before visiting Santa and my family surprised me with some gifties from B&BW.

A beautiful day.

And the fun hardly stopped there.  Both kids were excited to see Santa this year. There was no trepidation, no fear - just pure magic for the asking.  Elaina popped herself right up on Santa's knee along with the Toys R Us catalog and pointed to at least a dozen things that she wanted.  Lincoln ran over to Santa and really just wanted some conversation.  Santa gifted them both with 'magical' elves; Lincoln's first year to care for one of his own.

It truly was a great night and the only thing that could have made it better was more sleep.  Sill fighting a cold and apparently my (new) old age has just worn me out.

familiar

Did I mention that hunting season is (almost) drawing to a close?  And were you aware that my beloved husband also stops shaving his face at the end of October?  An entire month of wiskers.

Joy.

And so, 5 whole minutes before friends were coming over for dinner, Eric decided it was beard-off-night.  He busted out the clippers and tackled his furry face until I could see the silouhette of the familiar face I had once known.  After a quick shower and full shave, my husband had been renewed.  Smooth, clean and handsome.  Tonight's thanks is all about my handsome husband and his face that I love.  I'm glad to see it's return.

Church play

Rest is good.  A day of doing so very minimal, almost nothing - priceless.

Today I have felt much better.  And so much for a day without commitment.  Housework.  Decorating Christmas outside.  Laundry.  Oh, and a little Christmas play that Elaina has been working on for nearly 3 weeks. This evening was the grand performance.

I signed up to help prepare the miniature cast with their stage make-up.  I took the liberty of doing Elaina's darling face at home and sparing time for the rest of the kids.  Within an hour, all the kids faces were shining like disco balls with glitter swept across their eyelids and their bodies busy with excitement.

Let me also mention that Lincoln wanted no part in attending play practice but, by the time the play actually rolled around, he whined that he wanted to be in the play.  So.  It doesn't quite work that way.

Seeing Elaina glowing with equal parts of confidence and blush, she made me so very proud.  She delivered her lines with ease and hit her mark every time.  To say that I am thankful for this girl would be a great understatement.  To say that this child makes my heart happy and completes my life is a closer to the truth.

Simple things

Maybe it's a head cold.  Maybe my neck pipes are rusting and discenigrating.  Still unable to discern.  But I don't feel good.  That, I am certain.

Though today carried no commitments, we were invited to a surprise party to celebrate one of Eric's friends/ co-worker's birthday.  Since I could see no way that my pajamas or my blanket would be acceptable at such an event, Eric took the kids and left me to rest at home.  This concludes my day.

Yet... the light at the end of the tunnel.  As I was putting Lincoln to bed he asked for a drink of water, upon my return with his mini cup only partly full, he whispered "thanks Mom.  You're the best."  My day had become fulfilled.  Blessed by this thirsty boy.

Grueling

It's been a grueling week.  It's week 2 of hunting season which easily translates to "mostly single mom season."  The kids have had severe attitudes which have landed them early bedtimes.  I've been battling cold symptoms and migraines.  And I'm looking at the third week in a row that my dining room is filled to capacity with closet purge/ outgrown clothes/ Christmas totes/ and incomplete projects - all needing attention and a new home.  This, alone, makes me batty.

At this point, I am thankful that the weekend is finally here, I've posted the 25 Days of Christmas tv schedule on the fridge and we don't have *too* many commitments for the weekend. I'm thankful for leftovers for dinner and brownie sundaes to celebrate a "green month" for Elaina (green on her daily report is good) and enjoying the fireplace in the kitchen to keep me toasty warm.  Capping off my evening, an early bedtime for me and a husband who is picking up some slack while I'm tucked into my bed.

Finding Good. And other things.

This is one heck of a way to kick off the gratitude blog.

As I was brushing Elaina's hair before bedtime on Tuesday, I noticed a little glisten in one of her strands of hair.  A tiny "bulb" if you will, that seemed pointedly out of place. Investigating more closely, it was becoming more clear to me that I had found a dreadful nit in her hair.  (Since my blogging break, I have failed to mention that we've been through this before with Elaina back in June.)  Oh, the work that is involved with nits and long hair.

Tonight's thanks is that we already had the shampoo/ treatment on hand and 3 hours later (and about 10 loads of laundry), we had remedied her of what could have potentially been spread to all of her friends and family.  I caught it early and at this point, I feel confident that our house and our heads are free and clear of this dastardly little bother.

It's time. No, really.

No excuses.  No more.

So much of life passes us by goes so. fast. these days.  While it's (mostly) all good, I can barely seem to keep up - even on a good day.  At the same time, I'm so thankful for all of the goodness and fulfillment that this crazy, hectic life has to offer and that's become my newest inspiration for breathing new life into this very stale blog.

A friend of mine posts her facebook statuses under, '#1000 thanks.'  And as sure as I can make time to facebook, I AM going to make time to post my thanks.  My gratitude journal as Oprah suggests.  Some thing or event in our day that makes my heart sing and deserves preservation.

Let's face it, I'm not a great writer by any stretch and it seems apparent that I have a tendency to ramble, feel overwhelmed and then shut down.  (thus: no blogging) But this, this will be easy.  And on the heel of Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, there is just SO much that I am thankful for each and every day.

I can be mostly certain that many of my posts may be choppy. Some may seem mundane while some may seem down right boisterous.  But, this is life - our life - and there's not a single day that I don't feel more blessed than I deserve.

Let the gratitude GUSH!!!!

Since we can't forget April

At least my last post can better explain how we've been spending our days, but this month has been so exciting and full otherwise that I would be remiss if I didn't do just a little recap and rewind.

At the end of the month of April, I saddled my lovely husband with a full weekend filling the role of Full Time Dad. My mom and I headed to Greg and Kate's house to scour the garage sales in their neighborhood and tried our best to hit up as many great restaurants as we possibly could. Generally when we land at Greg and Kate's house, my kids are in tow and we are usually celebrating something or have a specific focus for our time there.  Not this time.  We relaxed, we visited and enjoyed some Chinese, Indian and Greek cuisine which made for some wonderful meals.  I can only hope that this kind of getaway weekend will become an annual event for years to come!

Thanks again to my awesome brother and the best SIL ever for hosting me and for your generous hospitality! It was great to see you and get to share some time in your lives!

Home Team

By a show of hands: whose life isn't busy?

It was only a few weeks ago that I thought our days were relatively full and our free time ended up being filled with at least one of the 78 billion things that could be done around here.  And then baseball season started.

Oh. My. Goodness.

When we went to our first baseball meeting with Elaina,  I just about lost it when the coach said that the kids would be practicing on Monday and Wednesday and game days would be on Tuesday and Thursday.  Um? 4 days in a row? BaJesus! How can we keep up with that kind of schedule?

And then the last bit of winter weather broke and spring was upon us.  And it has rained! It has rained this season at least 4-5 days out of the week.  And suddenly, when you plan on baseball 4 days a week and only squeak in 1-2 practices/games (per week), I found that the coach's seemingly insane approach to the schedule started to make sense.

So our lives have changed.  Over baseball. And do you know what?  It has been great!  Elaina has emerged as quite a little athlete and has knocked some hits into the middle of the field.  Lincoln has been made to endure the practice days and game days along with us and has been quite content snacking and playing with his cars and his new found friends at the ball parks. The games are limited to 90 minutes (which generally run over) and it's coach pitch (overhand) until they miss 3 times and then get to hit the ball off the tee.  It's been impressive to watch these 5 -6 year olds progress with confidence and skill as the weeks go by.  As for me, it's lucky that I've already known many of the baseball moms, so it's been enjoyable to hang out with them for a few hours each week cheering on each others kids and talking about Mom-Stuff. Last but not least on the roster - Eric.  He's not so much of the sitting-on-the-sidelines kind of dad.  These kids are little and the coach staffing is slim.  At every game and practice, Eric is behind the gate helping the kids with their helmets, their batting stance and instructing them on what to do next.

Even though I haven't had time to share about my wonderful solo trip to visit my brother and SIL in Columbus and I haven't dished on our recent addition to our home scape, or Mother's Day or Lincoln's birthday - all is well with our family.  We've been busy, but it's been fun and exciting, whirlwind kind of busy!

New

Highlights of this week include:

Elaina is now eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Yeah, I get that this seems kinda lame to some, but seriously - in this house - THIS is BIG news!  PB&J!  Yes!  A new food!

Lincoln still has his cough but his temperament seems to be washing in a flood of sweetness. I've often said that his maturity and demeanor comes in tidal waves.  Recently, some of the defiance has begun to diminish and I'm seeing more smiles, more happy and more hugs.  Yes!  A new boy!

Elaina has been playing baseball and tonight was her first game.  Oh, the cuteness!  2 quick facts: Her coach is a friend of ours and their shirts are green.  As he called the team in their first huddle before the game, he shouted to them, "Come over here all you little boogers!"  Yes!  A new evening commitment!  (with boogers!)

Lincoln has become Mr. Social at the baseball fields.  He has met lots of new friends to share his toys with and has been exceptional at including all the kids he meets to play together.  Yes!  A new director in the house!

It's been a good week!

Easter Flop

Let me take you back to last weekend. Easter weekend.  The holiday we look forward to for hosting our family at our house and cramming Easter baskets full of goodies.

We seemed to be off to a good start.  Though my brother's family wasn't able to come, both sets of grandparents arrived early in the afternoon to enjoy the day together.  Late into the evening, everyone scattered to the bedrooms knowing that we would be racing the clock for Easter service the next morning.  (that would be 8 people out of the house by 9:00 a.m.) Elaina was designated to share our bed in order to accommodate the sleeping arrangements.  Little did I know to expect my Darling Girl to be such a snoring machine.  Since I wasn't able to fall asleep next to her, I moved into my snuggly, little boy's bed.  And, little did I know to expect an hour after I'd fallen asleep, Lincoln began to cough.  A cackly, croupy, barky cough.  The child continued to cough relentlessly for the next 4 hours.  I'm pretty sure I tried every trick in the book to ease his cough to no avail.

Church became out of the question for both Lincoln and myself since we hadn't any sleep and I wasn't sure where we stood on him being contagious.  And as if it weren't enough that my boy was suffering a relentless cough, I couldn't peel myself out of bed after only sleeping a combined total of about 4 hours. I so much regret missing the kids find their Easter baskets, my darling girl beaming in her new dress and sharing our church service with both sets of grandparents.

I'd like a do-over.

And just for the sake of complaining just a little bit more, I discovered the reason that Lincoln was like the Energizer Bunny on RedBull despite sleeping just a short time was due to the medication I had been giving him.  Apparently, it turned him into a little firecracker while I was the one who made a double iced coffee and nursed my sleep-deprived, zombie-self for much of the day.

I wouldn't doubt that the next nice weather day that comes by, I may just dress both of my kids up in their Easter Sunday clothes for the sake of having a spring picture of them looking cute together. And it wouldn't even surprise me if I might happen to hide some random plastic eggs one last time before they get put up in the attic for the year.  That is - if I don't get an Easter do-over; grandparents and all.  Still crossing my fingers for that to happen.

The next one follows

I signed Lincoln up for pre-kindergarten today.
School.
For my baby.  Because even when he's 30, he'll still be my baby.

Lincoln is excited and would like to go on the school bus tomorrow.  And as much as he is my baby, I am excited for him as well.  Some days I feel as though he gets into some trouble at the babysitter's house because he is bored.  When the weather doesn't allow for them to get outside, I can tell that he gets restless and tired of the monotony of staying inside day after day.

I know my son is bright, caring and capable of learning.  I also know that he doesn't show it in the same way that as his sister - as we are accustom to.  Lincoln's temperament is more challenging.  He wears his emotions on his sleeve and reacts more defiantly and more immediately than the situation calls for.  He can be demanding and oppositional and at times, he's just down right unpleasant.  Like I said - he's got a different temperament, for sure.

But then there are times that he lays down his guard and he is loving and sweet and funny.  When you remind him that his words need to be nicer, he immediately complies.  He's very complex.

My hope for him starting school is that he will grow.  I want for him to grow within himself to discover more how to get along with other kids and follow adult directions.  I want to see some maturity set in and accountability.  I realize this seems like I'm asking a lot - some adults don't even seem to possess these qualities.  What I'm asking for is him to be exposed to these attributes for him to use as a launching pad. Although he is still only little - I know that Lincoln is capable of big things.  I can't wait to see what his future holds.  School can't seem to get here soon enough for the both of us.

On Relationships

I've failed miserably in keeping such accurate accounts of the life and times of my family - more specifically, my kids.  Kindergarten has aged my child.  She's become somewhat cultured, mature and just... just... further away from a dependant young soul who relies upon her parents so heavily.  She's growing up.  From the way she sits comfortably at her fold- up Cabbage Patch kid play table with her skinny legs crossed to the advanced vocabulary words she carefully chooses in conveying her ideas.

Growing up.  Which is a good thing - but seriously... how does it happen so quickly?

And then, there is this boy.  A boy whom we will call "Stink." (Because all boys should STINK until my daughter is well into her 20's!) Stink has liked Elaina and vice versa.  In fact, it is rumored that the entire kindergarten class knows that Stink likes Elaina.

Since I hadn't heard much about Stink lately, I decided to inquire about him tonight at the dinner table.

Me:  How are your friends at school?  I haven't heard you talk much about Stink lately.

Elaina:  Uhhh... I'm just not that into him.

Me:  (Snicker:-)  Not into him, huh?

Elaina:  Yeah.  He tried to sit by me at lunch today but I just ignored him.  In fact, I don't try to talk to him at all.

**Break for Mom and Dad to rejoice with simulated high-fives and fist pumping**

Oh. My.  5 years- old this child.  And already so wise to the world of dating.  If  only all of her teenage years could go so easily.

Holy Moly.

Today was a landmark day.  Not only did we celebrate Palm Sunday in church, but today is the day that Eric and I became members of the church and Lincoln became baptized.

As we began to conclude our church membership classes, the thought of Lincoln's baptism, or non-baptism as the case may be, crossed my mind.  When Elaina was born, I was still attending the Catholic church on somewhat of a regular basis.  Naturally, having her baptized into the Catholic church seemed fitting since Eric wasn't coming with me at that time- she would be baptized into my faith religion.  As the years went on and Lincoln joined our family, I was finding out how hard it was to juggle two kids and sacrifice extra sleep when it happened to find me on weekend mornings.

It became easy to slip into the 2 free day-weekend zone with our mornings to ourselves and loose commitments.  All the while, not being tied to one church or another and developing feelings of guilt over not having Lincoln blessed into any religion.  I knew that had to change.  Upon the consent of our Pastor, we began to prepare for Lincoln to join us in our new church through the rite of baptism.

Today was the day.  He looked quite handsome in his white dress shirt and clip-on tie.  As we all approached the front of the church, the Pastor came to the part of the service which would include Lincoln. As he announced Lincoln's full name in his official and loud voice, Lincoln looked up and smacked the palm of his hand straight across his own forehead and muttered, "Oh boy."  The congregation burst into laughter and everything went smoothly thereafter.  That's one thing about Lincoln; you never know what to expect from that kid, but he's constantly full of surprises and can bring you laughter when you least expect it.

And they came back!

My kiddos and my parents survived (and enjoyed!) their time together. Quoting Elaina, "I bet that I had the very best spring break of all the kids in all of the school!" (while at her grandparents' house)

Ahh... sweet, innocent child who has not yet been made aware that some families really do plan vacations for spring break.  Generally where it is warm and the sun is shining.  Disney anyone?

Anyway, it was wonderful to hear that not only my kids, but my parents also enjoyed their time together.  Eric and I also got to enjoy a break from the ordinary. On 2 consecutive mornings, I got myself ready for work and walked straight down the stairs and right out to my car.  No kids, no bookbags, no fits, no stalling, no crying, no... you get the picture. It was glorious.  Friday night even allowed a Date Night for my husband and me.  We shopped at our leisure and then over-indulged on Indian food and went to bed early.  A wonderful ending to a great week!

Evaluation

In preparation of spending time away from my kiddos while they visit my parents, I was having a serious talk with Elaina about how Grandma will take care of her while she is visiting and that if she needs anything, Grandma can help her.  I also reminded Elaina that Grandma H. is my mom and is the one who taught me how to be a good mom too. While on topic, I also decided to inquire if my daughter shared the same opinion of  "The Good Mom Title."

Me: "Elaina?  Do you think that I am a good mom?"

Elaina: (in the most sincere, serious tone a 5 year-old can muster)(looking me straight in the eye)
"I think that you are the best Mom I could ever ask for."

And AS IF I could love that darling, little girl any more than I already do. Her words were like gold to me.

In the grand scheme of my life, my career and anything I ever choose to do - that alone, is one of the single most defining moments in my life.  My daughter's rating of my job performance thus far. Golden.

Portability

Wouldn't it just happen that I have loads of cutie pictures to upload and our desktop (which I prefer) takes a dump the same night I actually have time to spend here?

So the laptop and me.  We're becoming friends.  It is considerably more comfortable sitting in the recliner with my feet kicked up and cuddled under a warm blanket. And funny enough, if my blog writings actually do survive the test of time for my children to read, how funny to them that we still have a desktop computer?  < I like it okay?>

For the sake of catching up, we've been enjoying some pretty busy days around here.  Today marks the beginning of Elaina's first elementary school spring break.  She's been excited to spend time playing with her friends at the babysitter's house, but she and Lincoln are far more excited for Wednesday when they get to go to grandma and grandpa's house for the remainder of the week.  Every single morning, Lincoln gets ticked off when he discovers that it isn't "Grandma and Grandpa day" yet.

While I wouldn't exactly say that I'm excited to ship my kids off, having a break in our routine is good for everyone.  My agenda includes tackling some household projects, arriving at work on time and a lovely date with my husband on Friday night. And as long as we're talking about spring break, I hope this 30 degree weather breaks soon so as to give my parents a break to enjoy some time outdoors with my kids! Wish them luck!

Unprepared

When I had this bright idea to give myself a fresh start with this whole blogging bit, my intention was to blog a little each and every night.  Random thoughts. Stuff we did that day.  Funny things my kids said.  Pretty much anything would be acceptable as long as I made time.

But - TIME! The key component to any project.  Definitely need time.

I wasn't prepared for the too-late bedtimes involving pulling out the 5 day-old dangling tooth from my daughter. (which I saddled Eric with)  The whining pleas from my son needing his 4th last- hug of the night. At 10:00!  My husband whose work schedule generally involves limited traveling seems to amp up this time of  year, sending him packing a few times each month. The laundry piling up because this winter has been brutally cold and we're piling on layers of clothes to keep warm.  And our once a week commitment to attending "church school" to become new members of the church.

With that said, tonight was one of those random nights of obligation: "Preschool Literacy Night." The only way I even found out about it being scheduled for this evening was by a random check on their website.  Also, I didn't exactly know that they intended for the actual *almost* preschoolers to join in.  I arrived at the school early and saw other parents walking their Littles into the building.  I speed- dialed Eric and told him to hustle our little fellow on up to the school.  I was both surprised and impressed at how well Lincoln followed along with the program until story time when he began to pick his nose and held it out to the librarian, announcing "I got a booger!"  Right during the story. Right in front of all of the other kids, parents and staff.  Awesome!

When you have kids, I think it would be fair to say that you can never be prepared for what will come next!

Away in P.A.

Pittsburgh (and Pennsylvania in general) is easily becoming one of our favorite weekend and mini-cation destinations.  We have become huge fans of the Pittsburgh Children's Museum and only recently discovered the Pittsburgh Science Center.  Ah-mazing places they are!

Over the long MLK weekend, we took a quick overnighter to Pittsburgh with the sole objective of playing, relaxing and resting. As a result: we put so much energy into playing that the rest and relaxation were only squeezed in during car rides.  Ha! So much for that plan!

Some highlights of our trip include:

* Like many of our other Hotel Hijinx, the pool at our hotel was closed for maintenance.  Part of the reason we plan overnighter stays is for the very specific reason of having a pool.  They sent us next door (literally, outside to the next building over) to what could only be described as a 1960's style "bath house" which lay claim to a huge sized swimming pool that was only minimally heated.  And since they didn't allow any inflatable water-wings, our kids relied on (pool provided) pool noodles and a couple random life jackets that we scrounged up from their heaping pile of kick-boards. Still fun. But not what we were anticipating.

* We chose our hotel location near the ever-popular hot spot "Carson Street."  Come to realize that it's only hot to those who are single, early 30's and loaded!  Basically a very grown-up venue. And since we decided to walk Carson Street to find a restaurant for dinner, we ended up at what seemed to be a very high class restaurant with our (very tired) 3 and 5 year olds in tow. Eric and I enjoyed our dinners (at "market price!") while the kids laid across our corner booth seat munching on their special order french fries, grilled cheese and chicken strips that the chefs generously prepared upon request. (Classy restaurants: no kids menus!)(doh.)

* Something even more interesting about our dining experience:  Once we arrived at our table, Eric was taking off his coat to reveal his MVFD (fire dept.) sweatshirt and a guy one table over asks if that fire department is on Ohio or in Pennsylvania.  The guy's face lit up when Eric replied "Ohio" and said "no way, that's where we live!"  Seriously, out of small town of about 850, what are the chances that we meet some local villagers at the ritzy, Carson Street establishment?

As for the rest of our trip, I think that the pictures may be the best way for a recap of some of the fun we had at the museums.

Big Mouse

I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to look at a mini- wheel of colby jack cheese the same way ever again.  Which is most interesting since that has been Elaina's cheese-of-choice for her lunch sandwiches.

A few weeks back, Lincoln was on a snack spree and wanted to graze on snack food for what seemed to be most of the day. While the rest of the family was in the other room, he helped himself to his snack-of-choice for that moment.  I walked into the kitchen to find my precocious little man sitting at the kitchen table chomping on the entire slab of cheese slices, fresh from the deli.  Bite mark after bite mark from every angle.

I'm pretty sure he got his requirement of calcium that day.

Membership and Privileges

It all started about a year and a half ago.  Elaina received a postcard from a friend of ours, inviting her to come to Vacation Bible School.  She was thrilled, we agreed, she went.  And she LOVED it!  I can still remember her asking several days after it concluded if she could go back to VBS.

On her last day there, they had a little finale program for the parents to attend with a bonfire to follow.  We all had a good time.  The following Sunday, they invited the kids back to perform some songs for the congregation and Elaina begged to go.  The setting was comfortable and the people were friendly.  And since we had previously decided we would start "shopping around" for a church to attend, we found that we settled into this one quite nicely and our search was over before we really began.

It's been some time now that we've been attending church as a family. We've come to know even more people and we've even gotten involved with some of the functions they offer.  After all this time, we've decided to make the commitment to become actual members of this church.  The membership classes have begun and we will be sharing in membership in the church by the middle of April.  I'm trusting that this membership comes with the best rewards program around.

All Yours

I have more than a little catching up to do. Per usual.

Way back when it was actually Valentine's Day, I made my first appearance as a "Room Mom" for Elaina's Valentine's Day party. She was entirely thrilled to see me in her classroom and was beaming with pride as she passed out her heart covered plates and napkins to her friends.  The kids were wild with excitement, sugar and their newly- gifted Valentine mail.  It was like 27 little jumping beans bouncing, bobbing and babbling for 45 minutes straight.  Absolute fun!

The day was even more special when both of my kids received Valentine Day cards in the mail.  Some with stickers, some with money and some covered with their favorite characters and 3D glasses.  My day, in fact, was made a little more special too when a luscious box of chocolate covered strawberries was delivered to me at work by my Dear Husband. You can imagine my surprise at this gift since I have been known to tell him to save the money of sending flowers since they only last such a short amount of time.  Chocolate covered strawberries though - that was creative, thoughtful and delicious!

Girl Talk

Monday night was Girls Night Out.  Wonderful friends, fun, laughter, food, drinks and a little gossip for good measure.

Since becoming a mom and wife, for that matter, I've made it a priority to get together with my girlfriends for some stress-busting fun and laughter on a semi-regular basis.  I'm fortunate to be included with both my work-friends and my neighborhood gals to break the monotony of a weekly routine to get together and enjoy some light hearted fun.  So much fun that my face and my stomach hurt from non-stop talking and laughter.  How fortunate I am to have these girls in my my life;-)

In other news about relationships, Elaina got her first phone call from a boy tonight.  Gah!  I wasn't home from work when he called so Eric gave me the lowdown on their 2 minute long conversation.  (since he put her on speaker phone!) (kudos Dad!) Aaron is her "boyfriend's" name and Elaina has come home from school on more than one occasion with colored pictures and drawings from this young man in her kindergarten class.  Yesterday, she brought home a handmade Valentine card signed "Love, Aaron."

Wasn't it just yesterday that my baby girl was learning to walk and say her first words?  And now, she's getting her first crush.  I am so not ready for this.

Contract of marriage

And did I happen to mention that it's SuperBowl Sunday?????

While the Steelers are going for their 7th championship win, our family is upholding the contractual agreement setforth within our marriage vows (I'm pretty sure) that we will all become huge Pittsburgh Steelers fans, like The Hubs and stop our world for this:

Go Steelers!

Silenced

I'm not sure if I have enough words to adequately describe the weather of this past week.  Something tells me that "abominable ice storm" may be sufficient.

For two days, we were blasted with rain, freezing rain, sleet, drizzly rain, snow and more rain. And it all froze. Every blessed time; it froze.  Power lines were stressed and broken with the newly incurred pounds of ice.  Cable lines were down.  Schools were closed and our county was declared a "State of Emergency."

Throughout all of the turmoil our county and so many others incurred, we were fortunate that we were able to persevere.  We were without cable, phone lines and internet service for a few days and we did just fine.  We drove 20 miles under the speed limit at times and inched along slippery walkways and we managed.

In times like these, it reminds me to appreciate all of the things that sometimes get overlooked on a regular day.  A husband who calls to check that I made it to work safely.  A babysitter who is more than accommodating when I drop off an extra kid when the schools are closed.  And my kids; seeing their tired faces after investing so many long hours of playing with their friends that they seem to forget to greet me when I get home.  Even that is okay with me - it tells me that they enjoyed their day.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the last blast that Old Man Winter has in store for us, but I am also pretty sure that we'll be able to handle whatever comes our way.  It's a good feeling knowing the Lord is present in our lives and that He is carrying us through no matter what our outside elements are pouring down upon us.

"Son"shine

Sometimes bedtime can get a little hairy when it comes to trying to wind down a busy-body 3 year- old and an ever-relentless 5 year-old.

Tonight was hardly an exception.  We read each kid 2 books in their bed and then cuddle, hugs & kisses and have lay-with time. Only a little while after I left his room tonight, I heard some commotion and the sound of little feet creeping around in his room. When I went upstairs to investigate, he greeted me with outstretched arms and told me that I could hold him now:-)  And then asked me to sing him a song.  As I began to sing one of our favorites, "You Are My Sunshine" he was looking at me, candidly mouthing the words in exaggeration and pointing along with the words to the song.  It kinda cracked me up!  He piped up and we tried to sing the words together but found that we could both only get through a couple words before we both burst into simultaneous laughter!  That kid can be so crabby at times but boy, does he have humor!

And then came "Jingle Bells," which, I am fairly certain we will be singing well into the summer months.

Pssstt....

One more thing that I can't let slip by:

While talking with some friends during fellowship (read: Snacks!) last Sunday, Lincoln was sitting quietly munching happily on his meat, cheese and cookies until I felt a little tug at my sweater coming from beside me.  Lincoln reached his arm up from his seat to whisper to me, out of the blue, "Mom, I love you."

Have I mentioned how blessed I am to have this little guy to call my own?

Winter Weekends

Not a surprise: I'm already lagging on the blog attempt I meant to keep simple.
Prepare for a little rewind action here on the blogfront.
All of 2 weekends ago, my in-laws came for a visit before they made their winter travel as Florida Snowbirds. Throughout the long weekend, we kept a brisk pace.  We tag-teamed the kids at Toys 'R Us to actually make it out of the store without tears. (Unlike the last time I took them there myself.) We made all of Lincoln's dreams come true with his first trip to Chuck E. Cheese.  We had taken Elaina there in celebration Potty Training Graduation and so, like the kind big sis that she is, *she* took it upon herself to promise Lincoln a trip there as well to celebrate him being potty trained.  So, we finally went. It was nice to have 4 grown ups helping to chase after our kids since Lincoln was like a little ping-pong ball, zipping through the place like it was his job.

Together we enjoyed some meals out, a movie night in and the traditional trip to the Donut Shop for take out donuts. I'm not sure if the grandparents have conditioned our kids to the privilege of trips to the Donut Shop or it's the other way around.

Once Grandma and Grandpa W. left, the week was full of prepping, cleaning and planning.  Together with a group of friends, 4 couples total, we had arranged our first Progressive Dinner Party.  Appetizers with our first host family, dinner at our house and a dessert bar and game night at another house. To each new location our party traveled we packed kids and babysitters until finally dispersing them to enjoy a grown-ups-only-visit for our last stop.  Our party was a blast, the food was fantastic and we all made a pact to host another round as soon as we can arrange another date on our calendars. Super, supper, success!

Catching some Zzzz's

Tonight was better.  Kids were more cooperative, Mom didn't lose her mind (or her patience) before 7:00 and Eric was home to co-pilot the bedtime endeavor.

As I lay in Lincoln's bed after our books are read and faces are kissed, I felt instantly exhausted. Like the kind of exhausted that generally strikes about midnight when I'm trying desperately to check off my mental to-do list.  Not the kind of exhausted you would expect at 8:30 at night.

The more I began to ponder the consequences of me going to bed before 9:00, the more I thought about how tired I always feel when the kids' bedtime rolls around.  When I put Elaina to bed, I have been known to nod off for a short period of time also.  She is like a cozy, little, sleeping pill.  Just like when she was a baby.  Very relaxing and comfortable.

Lincoln, on the other hand, is quite opposite.  I do feel tired when I lay with him after we read books together, but the reason I feel beat-down-tired is because he has zapped all my energy from me. He uses my energy to get himself amped up to stay awake for hours after we put him to bed.  The little Turdlette will stay in his bed and play and not let himself fall asleep.

This equation would then pretty much explain our mornings; Elaina is (generally) very much of a morning person. It doesn't take much for her to fall asleep and it doesn't take her long to perk up in the morning.  Lincoln; doesn't ease into sleep very well and is MOST definitely NOT a morning person.  It takes him a LONG time to rev up to start his day.

So there!  I finally put my finger on it!  Not particularly useful since I can't change either one of them, but it's something! Right?

Calling all Supermoms

Tonight my children were awful.

According to Lincoln, I was the wrong parent to pick him up at the sitter's house.  And he kicked and screamed and cried.  For an overly-long period of time.

According to Elaina, it was her job to challenge and then defy all parental authority  And after a fit of crying as if I had squeezed her toes off of her, she apologized and went to sleep within minutes of laying in her bed.

I hate nights like these.  Drained. Fried. Zapped. The now-equivalant of me.

Transformation

For the past 4 1/2 years, our daily routine has included much attention to Elaina's hair.  Braids or a bun at bedtime and some type of hair-do for each day.  I've surprised myself at the speed I am able to wrangle her hair into a neat and tidy bun as well as long, smooth braids.  Day after day after day.

It wasn't until late last year that I presented Elaina with the idea of getting her hair cut so that she could donate her hair to help another child.  We talked about how different she would look, we discussed how much she wanted off and when she might feel ready.  I left the decision in her hands as I found myself waffling back and forth if this was something I was ready for.  Even though it's a lot of maintenance, Elaina's hair is nothing short of amazing.  Natural highlights, smooth as silk and full and beautiful.

We looked up a few hair donation websites together and when she saw the pictures of the children without hair and then how they looked transformed with their new hairpieces and beaming smiles, she knew that she felt ready to make the cut.  In fact, while the donation sites only require 10" of hair, she asked if she could go even shorter to give the kids even longer hair like hers.
I made the appointment, stuffed my pockets with tissues as I feared a flood of emotion might overtake me and we made our way to the beauty shop.  She was asked to stand while the stylist kneeled to cut it since it was so long it wouldn't all lay over the chair for a clean cut. I didn't cry. The look on Elaina's face was priceless.  She was patient and she was joyful.

Words can't begin to describe how proud I am of Elaina and her selfless heart and caring demeanor.  Even more, I love seeing  how circumstances begin to unfold which help to shape her and define her as such a special and unique child.

We are both equally thrilled with her new haircut and this is the first time that Elaina has been able to brush her hair on her own.  It was something I never considered before but her hair was so long, her arms hardly reached it's length until now. Seeing her brush her hair with such pride is a reward of it's own.

P.T. - Life with a boy

Innocent and sweet.  "Mom, I wanna go on da potty train. Please Mom, please." - Lincoln, age 2 1/2

I love that kid.

It's funny to me that when a baby boy lands in your lap everyone who has had kids seems to make the make the universal comment "boys are so much different from girls."  Sure.  And as a new parent of a "boy" you're willing to accept just about anything that rolls your way.  Until it's time to potty train the boy.

We started the process when Lincoln was nearing age 3 only to find that in no way was he ready.  So obviously Not- Ready that we halted our efforts almost entirely. The seasons changed and along about summertime, (and months after turning 3) we decided that it was time for Lincoln to learn about big-boy underwears* as he liked to call them.

August was our biggest month to push potty training and finally this month, I can most assuredly say that Lincoln is potty trained.  I'd refer to the past 2 months as "mostly potty trained" but this month just feels safer to say that the process is complete!

As Lincoln is only months away from turning 4, we still rely on diapers for napping (precaution) and diapers at nighttime.  But I have to admit that every time I'm in the store, my cart can't pass up the baby aisle - just to see if there's anything baby that we need.  I have to admit that I will always have a secret kind of love for the smell of clean diapers; fresh from the package.  And the crispy, crinkley noise that scoots along with a freshly diapered babe will always make me swoon for another little crawler of my own.  But overall, I am thrilled with the independence that age 3 and 5 brings to our family.

Yes, boys are so much different from girls and I couldn't be happier that our little family has gotten to experience both.

Because Monday's Happen

This was my second year in a row of taking vacation for the week between Christmas and New Year's.  And it's glorious! It's time to wind down, clean up, clean out, relax, play and enjoy.  Weekends tend to slip away without any of that happening.  So, vacation.
My kids have enjoyed the break and it's been nice to enjoy Jammie-Days snuggling with my favorite little people. Our morning routines have collapsed and we've loosened the belt on bedtimes.  Elaina and Lincoln have been each other's best friend and each other's biggest annoyance.  All within minutes, generally.  Some days I felt like nothing more than the referee.  But I'll take it.
And now it's January.  Not much to look forward to in January but snow, colder temperatures, more snow and darkness before I get home from work.  Oh, and then another 2 months of the same to follow.
So much for my personal pity-party.  Of course I count my job, relative of income, as a blessing and I appreciate the structure that our routine has helped develop in our kids.  But throwing the rules and the schedule and the morning rush - out the window for a single, solitary week sure was nice.

Saying Goodbye to 2010

2010 treated our family well.  Nothing earth-shattering.  Nothing tragic.  Nothing but good.  I'll take that.

For the past several years, we have stayed overnight on New Year's Eve at our friends house and celebrated the new year with a giant group of their family.  This year, their plans changed and we welcomed an evening of no plans and (very) low key acknowledgement of 2011.

We dedicated out last day of 2010 to enjoying a Family Date Day.  We started our day by seeing the movie "Tangled" in the theater, turning our kiddos loose in the play area in the mall, followed with dinner out.  The highlight of my evening and Elaina's was a surprise trip to the hospital.  No one was injured; we were merely visitors reminiscing.  Since Lincoln was born at a local hospital that we pass frequently in our travels, Elaina has a hard time understanding why we never pass "Her Hospital."  (which is more to the south, which doesn't land in the path of passing-by)  When we told her that we had a surprise planned for especially her, she lit up and said, "I hope it's just more than a kiss and a hug!  Not that I don't like that, but will it just be more than that?"  (God I love that girl!)

As we drove closer to the hospital in the dark of the night, Elaina spotted a giant shining Christmas  tree beaming from the rooftop.  It caught her attention immediately and assumed it was a hotel or a store.  We pulled into the parking lot and she asked if she had ever been there before.  I assured her that she had.  She and I walked into the sliding doors and not a person was in sight.  All was quiet and still.  As she pushed the elevator button, I revealed that this building was in fact, the very hospital that she was born.  We came upon the maternity floor and the nurses allowed us access to view the now-empty nursery to see where her story all began.  As I kissed my Best Girl, I pointed out the room they allowed us to have and enjoy our new baby that we were meeting for the first time. The baby that changed our lives and mended our broken hearts.  The baby that has grown so mature and beautiful and continues to fill our lives with happiness.

Walking out of the hospital doors with my now-big girl wrapped tightly in my arms, my heart was every bit as fulfilled and joyous as the same day we got to take our beautiful daughter home for first time.  It was "more" than just a kiss and a hug.

Shall we begin?

My title post; the same title as my very first post on my very first blog.

If you've found me here, welcome to my second attempt of blogging. It's the beginning of a new year, the slate is clean, resolutions are in place and too many events have passed me by that I've wanted to freeze in time.  Our kids are 3 1/2 and 5 1/2 and they are the most interesting, unique and fun, little goofballs you ever did meet.

My original blog was fully dedicated to them.  This one will likely be too, however, my plan is to use this as a means of what I like to refer to as "shaking out my brain." Jotting down the memories of the day;  both good and the could-be-better moments.  Anything that stains my mind that touches my heart - this is the place. My place for reflection. And my place to box up the sweet moments that I want to hold onto with all my heart.

 Welcome... make yourself at home!
